I am an artist and educator living in Southern Maine. I received a BFA from Montserrat College of Art in 2002 and completed the Post-bacc Certification program at Maine College of Art & Design in 2008. I currently teach K-5 Art in North Berwick, ME and also at the Hurd Academy in North Berwick. I grew up in CT and have lived in MA, NH and NC.
I have always made artwork about things that are a part of my life. Often routine things that I see everyday that take on meaning. I have primarily been a painter for the majority of my art life but I play with a fun variety of materials from wood and stone carving to printmaking.
These 2 works are the beginning of a new theme exploring the cracks in the road. Roads have always been a big part of my life from a long road trip in 2002–2003 to the many years I spent doing roadwork. Recently I have been looking at the cracks as I walk and run my neighborhood and thinking about what interesting lines and shapes they make and the meanings that they can hold. Sometimes cracks are the beginning of the end of something while in other instances it is the beginning of something new. They almost always bring change.
These artworks are a change in subject matter for me. I don't usually make work about myself directly. These represent how my life has changed since I have become a teacher. I have married, moved, started a family and gone from driving a pickup truck to a minivan. The imagery is all a part of those changes.
The first is a reflection of my life before I was a teacher. Where I lived, worked and created. The cracks break up the pieces and created a visual space to put the parts.
The second shows parts of my life since I have been teaching. The cracks serve the same purpose but the spaces have changed.. Things are much busier now.
