Home After Dark: MAT Program Exhibition

Home After Dark explores the Master of Arts in Teaching candidates’ relationship with artmaking as they navigate the ever changing path to becoming educators. Our show offers a glimmer of what life looks like for practicing artists who spend their daylight hours teaching and creatively flourish when in their own home after dark.

Candidates’ work in Home After Dark is centered around the multiple meanings of practice: the act of creating through individual art practice, and literally practicing to become teachers and educators. Coming home after dark - staying out later than usual - is exciting; it implies a day of hard work, of spending extra time with something important, a day spent working towards a goal. What comes next? After many long days and rewarding sunsets, candidates are coming home to themselves, their artmaking, and the next stage of their careers.

“Home” means something different to everyone. To some, home is returning to a beloved medium after a long break. Home is an uninhibited mindset after years of rigid and rigorous artmaking. Home is a quiet studio to experiment alone or a busy school classroom of students working away. Candidates have stayed late to practice, learn, and follow their passions in art and education; they head home after the stars come out to student teaching and careers beyond.

Home After Dark will be open from November 29, 2026 to January 9, 2027 in the Zand Head Gallery at MECA&D.
