Maine MILL, located at 35 Canal St. in Lewiston, presents a new art installation commemorating the one-year remembrance of the Lewiston mass shooting. Running from October 16, 2024, through September 6, 2025, the exhibit features work by local photographer Tanja Hollander and Deaf multimedia artist Miia Zellner MAT ’23.
The installation incorporates 261 plastic flower sleeves from memorial sites, exploring themes of loss and community recovery. This project is part of Maine MILL’s ongoing efforts to document and preserve items related to the October 25, 2023 tragedy, which claimed 18 lives, including four members of the Deaf community.
Hollander is an artist who works with photography, video, installation, and social practice to understand how cultural and visual relationships help people make sense of the challenging world.
Zellner is a Deaf multimedia artist who lives in Lewiston. Zellner graduated from Maine College of Art & Design’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in 2023. Their work explores themes of the Deaf experience and the relationship between humans and their environment. In addition to their practice, Zellner teaches elementary art in Turner and inspires students to discover their artistic voice.
Please RSVP here for the private opening reception on October 16, 5:00-7:00pm. Light refreshments will be served.
Grants from various Maine foundations and councils support the exhibit. Visitors can view the installation from 10:00am to 4:00pm Wednesday through Saturday at Maine MILL.
