Tomlinson is the founding director of the Artists at Work department, focused on the personal and professional development of students and alumni.

Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) announced Jessica Tomlinson, Director of Artists at Work at the College, will retire on August 15, 2025. Tomlinson’s 20+ year career with MECA&D began in 2003 as Director of Public Relations, where she helped develop the College’s website, publications, social media presence, and marketing efforts. In 2012, Tomlinson became the founding director of the Artists at Work department, working with a team to integrate Public Engagement, Alumni Relations, and Career Services into a cohesive program focused on the personal and professional development of students and alumni.

Under her leadership, Artists at Work launched an online job board and the Above & Beyond grant, expanded internships, enhanced the Professional Studio Practice course, revised the Art & Entrepreneurship minor to include Personal Finance, and created Portfolio Day, pop-up shops, and fellowships with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy. She also piloted an art rental program while continuing to provide one-on-one support to hundreds of students and alumni.

"Jessica’s impact on the College is immeasurable,” said Laura Freid, President of Maine College of Art & Design. “Jessica’s optimism and dynamic presence have helped to inspire the confidence and provide the opportunity that our students and alumni need to propel them into tremendous personal and professional development opportunities. Her impact will be long-lasting, and she will be deeply missed.”

During her tenure as Director of Artists at Work, Tomlinson stewarded the Edward and Carol Friedman Endowed Fund, ensuring that every graduating senior receives professional tools, including business cards, headshots, and professional thesis documentation. She will continue partnering with the College to grow this endowment and ensure a sustainable future for the Artists at Work program.
