Ray Ewing ’12, photo editor for the Vineyard Gazette, has been named photojournalist of the year at the New England Newspaper & Press Association awards. The awards ceremony, held in Portsmouth, NH in early March, celebrated Ewing’s dedication to documenting life on Martha’s Vineyard.
Ewing developed his passion for photography at Maine College of Art & Design and the University of New Mexico, and returned to Martha’s Vineyard in the summers to intern at the Gazette. When he became the Vineyard Gazette’s photographer in 2023, he dedicated himself to telling the story of the island.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a book release, or a disaster, some heartbreaking tragedy or a big town meeting vote,” he said. “Whatever it is, [I] treat it with the same level of respect.”
